newsOnce the commercial hub and the primary North/South corridor through Melbourne’s CBD, in 1992 Swanston St was closed to through traffic, aiming to give priority to pedestrians and improve public transport linkages. Although improvements to the streetscape experience and public transport usage were evident, Swanston St emptied at night compromising public safety and impacting on retail performance. Limited evening traffic was reintegrated in the street in 1999 but a number of key concerns remained. Current proposals for the Swanston St’s reconfiguration include options which would see more vehicular traffic, better management of service vehicles, greater pedestrian linkages and better distribution of tram stops. Much like many of our urban centers in NZ, one of the key challenges is developing innovative ways to integrate greater volumes and more diverse traffic modes whist retaining the social and interactive qualities of successful streetscape environments.
