Reset Opens Doors
newsThe Hillary Trail officially opened in January 2010. The trail connects a 70km network of existing tracks though the Waitakere Ranges from Titirangi through Whatipu, Karekare, Piha, and Anawhata to Muriwai. The Reset team headed out to Karekare on a Friday afternoon to complete the Zion Trail, a loop section of the walkway.
The start was tough, as we headed south along the beach through soft sand and into a stiff south-westerly. Just past ‘The Island’ we ducked in front of the towering cliffs where vegetation had found some recluse and taken hold at the back of the dune system. The trail then meandered below the cliffs, following the old logging rail line used to transport Kauri from Anawhata to Piha.
We then passed through the railway tunnel which opened up on to a majestic wetland oasis formed hard against the cliff behind and the masses of sand dunes stretching up from Whatipu. We then scrambled uphill for 45 minutes through regenerating native forest with massive nikau groves following the ridgeline back north. The 'Watchman’ came in and out of view as we began our descent back into the Karekare Valley, navigating through wind blown Manuka and Toi Toi returning to the car park after 2.5 hours.
