newsWay down south in McMurdo Station, Antarctica, there is a truly unusual habitat supporting a remarkable range of scientific enquiry. Two communities prosper here – the US McMurdo Station “village”, and the Kiwi supported Scott Base. Garth’s Kiwi / US friend Dr Tim Stanton originally from Auckland now resident physicist at Monterey visited the area for 4 weeks to try out a new ocean flux profiler that will be deployed beneath ice shelves to study the interaction of the warming southern ocean with ice shelves. These ice shelves extend out from the massive ice sheets that cover the continent as they slowly flow down toward the ocean. The problem is that measurements of the ice shelves show a significant acceleration of this ice flow, and Tim and colleagues suspect that increased melting of the ice shelves are leading to this increased ice flow and subsequent sea level rise.
Tim deployed a prototype ice profiler in Windless Bight, offshore of Mount Erobus, by drilling 200m down through the Ross Ice Shelf using a hot water drill. The small, 5 person group of scientists lived out on the shelf for 14 days and successfully drilled a 20cm hole, and deployed the profiler into the ocean cavity below. A BBC film crew for the Frozen Planet series was on hand one of the days to record the activities, warts, cusses and all.
