newse2 is a critically acclaimed PBS series about the innovators and pioneers who envision a better quality of life on earth: socially, culturally, economically and ecologically. The series explores attainable solutions to pressing environmental and social challenges, and its stories are culled from a variety of fields including design, energy, transport, water, food and urban development. Interesting examples include; A Garden in Cairo Cairo, a city of 16 million, with only one square foot of green space per person prior to 2005. His Highness the Aga Khan, saw the need to relieve this congestion. The result is Al-Azhar Park: a 500-year-old dump-turned-“urban lung” that provides much-needed green space and a source of civic pride. Paris: Vélo Liberté Paris’ ambitious public-private Vélib’ bike initiative encourages residents to forgo cars for bikes and public transportation. In the process, the program has fostered a unique popular culture, complete with its own language, jokes and pick-up lines. For more information see: http://www.dsrny.com
