newsThe transformation of the first ‘Pocket Park’ at Milford Beach was completed in December 2011, as part of the long term overall development strategy of enhancing the Takapuna to Milford Coastal Walkway. The design process began by producing an overall ‘pocket park’ concept diagram which identified the key opportunities and constraints for these 10 small reserves. Key ideas included offsetting the access path to create a larger lawn area and providing increased amenity such as showers, drinking fountains and coastal planting.
Ocean View Rd was not originally identified as the first pocket park for redevelopment, until a substantial storm struck in February 2011, which destroyed the existing seawall and boat ramp requiring urgent replacement work.
The construction was staged over two contracts; the first stage being the construction of a new basalt seawall and boat ramp of which Auckland Stonemasons did a superb job. This included the placement of a number of feature boulders within the seawall. The second stage involved the construction of the deck area, shower platform, raised garden edge, site furniture and native shrub & exotic feature planting. A robust and carefully chosen palette of materials was specified for the park and will be replicated throughout the future stages of the walkway’s development.
