newsGarth and his family recently visited Tonga for a mid winter break. They first went up to the northern islands of Vava’u to join Garth’s brother in law James and partner Marina, who were sailing back from Europe on a catamaran. They then began a three day sailing trip down to the Ha’pai grounp, en route treated to play of many humpback whales and deserted atolls. Towards the end of the holiday they stayed at the Ha’atafu Beach Resort on the main island of Tongatapu for a week. This family run business was set up thirty years ago by Australian surfer/chef Steve Burling and is run by the extended family, consisting of a series of comfortable fales around communal facilities with great seafood provided. The surfing waves were a short 100m paddle straight in front of the resort, the left hander was quick and round! They enjoyed the relaxed Tonga time, the slow buses and tidy villages. Checked out the centre of Nukelofa, partly rebuilt though it would be fair to say it is a work in progress. Overall we should know our Pacific island neighbours better. Tonga is certainly worth a visit.
